Discover Julius Meinl’s latest limited-edition microlot specialty coffee from the Muungano Cooperative in the South Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This coffee’s flavor profile offers a rich muscovado sugar sweetness and a syrupy body, complemented by the freshness of lime fruit. As the coffee cools, juicy notes of honeydew melon and green kiwi emerge, while a gentle, nutty finish lingers on the palate.
The natural sweetness and complexity of the Bourbon variety, combined with the clarity and brightness of washed processing, create a refined, vibrant, and exceptionally clean coffee experience.

About the Muungano Cooperative
Muungano means “unity” in Swahili, reflecting the cooperative’s spirit of togetherness and the power of collaboration.
The Democratic Republic of Congo was once one of the world’s largest coffee producers, but decades of conflict, corruption, and poverty severely affected the industry. Production dropped by around 90%, and many farmers were forced to risk dangerous journeys across the border to Rwanda in order to sell their coffee at a fairer price.
Today, the Muungano Cooperative is a key player in the recovery of the coffee industry, bringing together more than 4,300 farmers. It helps improve coffee quality, ensures safer access to markets, and guarantees fairer payment for the work done.
Hope and resiliance
The current escalation of conflict in Congo has severely affected many communities, including members of the Muungano Cooperative. This makes the journey of this exceptional coffee to global markets more difficult while highlighting the importance of telling the stories of these farmers and supporting their work.
Every sip of Muungano coffee today symbolizes resilience, unity, and determination to build a better future for coffee farmers in Congo.
